The Kanchenjunga is home to several ethnic groups, such as the Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, and Tibetan people. They speak different languages, including Tibeto-Burman languages. The Newar people use Newar, also known as Nepal Bhasa.

The name “Kanchenjunga” originates from the Tibetan words “Gangs” and “Chen,” meaning “snow, ice” and “great.” In Nepali, “Kanchenjunga” translates to “crystal clear.” This diverse region is rich in cultural and linguistic variety.

Geography

While the journey is rewarding, it’s also demanding and involves walking over eight hours on multiple days through sparsely populated trails without modern comforts.

Dealing with thin air at higher altitudes intensifies the challenge, leaving you breathless sooner than expected. Being vigilant against altitude sickness is crucial, with early warning signs such as headaches, nausea, and breathing difficulties.

To reach the Kanchenjunga Base Camp, trekking from Taplejung is the primary approach, with two routes available: north to south and south to north.
